Korean-based company Samsung has become extremely popular in the last decade, competing head to head with Apple and many local companies. One of its most popular products to date is its home automation system, SmartThings.
The third generation hub, its most recent version, is considered one of the best in the market for a few reasons, but mainly because it is a Zigbee and Z-Wave hub, which allows you to connect to a wider variety of devices, many more than your regular hub can.
Another great feature is its functionality. You can create dozens of different scenarios and have your gadgets and hub respond according to your specifications.
Compatibility is one of the biggest selling points of this smart home system, since it can connect to virtually hundreds of products, including Arlo cameras, Lutron Caseta, Ecobee thermostat, Ring video doorbells, TP-Link smart plugs and switches, as well as August, Yale, Schlage, and Kwikset smart locks. Last but not least, it is also compatible with Google Nest hub. SmartThings can integrate all of them in just a few taps and you can also control them through Alexa and Google Assistant.
The app itself is one of its biggest successes because it is very easy to use and allows you to control essentially everything.
You can connect your hub via Wi-Fi or through an Ethernet cable (if you have the newer model) and depending on your home, it can connect to Zigbee and Z-Wave devices from 50 to 130 feet away.
The interface is better than before: it organizes your devices according to the room they are in and each device has its own card, allowing you to control each one separately. The menu at the top controls the settings for scenes, automations, rooms and more. You can create new scenes, automations, add new devices to the system and create lighting groups.
SmartThings is considered the best home automation system precisely because its automations are even better than Alexa and, especially better than Google Homes. You can easily link your smart home devices through Samsung’s app, but you can also link them together to respond to certain stimuli, such as water sensors getting wet, doorbell motion detectors identifying movement, etc.
A few important considerations:
- SmartThings v3 was launched in 2018, and it can be especially difficult to get nowadays because Samsung is no longer making it. However, you can get Aeotec Smart Home Hub, which has the same functionalities.
- The V3 does not have the battery backup the V2 model had, so if you lose power, your other smart devices will not work either.
- Upgrading your hub from an older model takes time, since you first need to remove the older device from the app and manually reconnect all your devices.
Create automated routines and responses to events around the house in an easy, hassle-free way and reap the rewards without even having to be at home.
