Learn About TSA PreCheck Requirements and Process
Understanding What TSA PreCheck Is and How It Works
TSA PreCheck is a U.S. government program that allows certain travelers to move through airport security checkpoints more quickly. When you participate in this program, you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you can use when booking flights. This number tells airport security personnel that you have already undergone a background check and identity verification process.

The program operates at more than 200 U.S. airports and covers approximately 99% of all commercial airline passengers. When you use your KTN at participating airports, you typically go through a dedicated security lane where the screening process is less strict than standard security. This means you can keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on during screening. You can also leave your laptop and compliant liquids bag in your carry-on luggage.
TSA PreCheck was created in 2011 as part of the Department of Homeland Security's efforts to balance security with passenger convenience. The program uses risk-based security to identify travelers who have undergone thorough background checks. According to the TSA, TSA PreCheck members experience an average wait time of 5 minutes or less at PreCheck security lanes, compared to standard security lanes where wait times can exceed 25 minutes during peak travel periods.
The program is managed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. TSA PreCheck membership lasts for five years from the date you are approved. The cost is $78 to $85 depending on when you enroll, though some credit cards and travel loyalty programs offer reimbursement for this fee.
Practical takeaway: TSA PreCheck is a federally run program that streamlines airport security screening for approved travelers. Understanding its basic structure helps you know what to expect throughout the enrollment and usage process.
Requirements and Background Check Information
To participate in TSA PreCheck, you must meet several basic requirements established by the Transportation Security Administration. First, you must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. If you hold a valid passport from another country or have traveled internationally, the TSA may request additional documentation to verify your identity and background.

The TSA conducts a thorough background investigation that includes checking criminal history records, immigration status, and other relevant security databases. This investigation goes beyond a simple criminal records search. The TSA examines felony convictions, misdemeanor convictions related to certain crimes, and immigration violations. The investigation also reviews your personal history including prior addresses, employment records, and other identifying information.
You must not have certain criminal convictions or security-related disqualifying offenses. These include felony convictions for crimes of violence, drug trafficking, or crimes involving weapons. Misdemeanors related to drugs, crimes of violence, or dishonesty also create barriers to participation. Additionally, individuals with outstanding warrants or those who are subject to certain restraining orders may not be accepted into the program.
Individuals with immigration concerns such as visa overstays, deportation proceedings, or lack of legal status cannot participate. If you have a pending legal case or current probation, this may affect your status in the program. The TSA maintains a list of individuals who are ineligible, and this list is updated regularly.
You must be at least 18 years old to enroll on your own. Minors can be included in a parent's or guardian's TSA PreCheck membership, but they do not have their own separate memberships or KTNs. Children traveling with a PreCheck member may move through the PreCheck lane with the approved adult.
Practical takeaway: Understand that TSA PreCheck requires U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence and a background check with no disqualifying criminal or immigration history. Knowing these requirements upfront helps you assess whether the program fits your situation.
The Enrollment Process and What to Expect
The TSA PreCheck enrollment process happens in two main steps: online registration and an in-person appointment at an enrollment center. You begin by creating an account on the official TSA PreCheck website and completing an online form. This form requests personal information including your full legal name, date of birth, citizenship status, contact information, and previous addresses.

During the online portion, you also provide information about your employment history, travel history, and answer questions about your background. You upload a digital copy of a valid government-issued photo ID such as a passport, state driver's license, or military ID. You may also need to provide proof of citizenship or permanent residency through documents like a birth certificate, passport, or green card.
After submitting your online registration, you receive instructions to schedule an appointment at an enrollment center. These centers are located throughout the country at airports, government offices, and private security company locations. As of 2024, there are over 380 enrollment centers operating across the United States. The TSA website contains a center locator tool to help you find the nearest location.
Your in-person appointment typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes. You bring original copies of the documents you uploaded online, your valid government-issued photo ID, and your Social Security card or tax return. A TSA officer or designated official will verify your identity, review your documents, and take your fingerprints using a digital fingerprinting system. The fingerprints are submitted to the FBI for a background check.
The entire enrollment process, from online registration to in-person appointment, normally takes between 4 to 6 weeks. However, the timeframe can vary depending on enrollment center capacity and the complexity of your background check. Once approved, you receive your KTN by email, which you can immediately use when booking flights. Your physical TSA PreCheck card arrives in the mail within 2 to 3 weeks.
Practical takeaway: The enrollment process requires both online registration and an in-person appointment with fingerprinting. Planning ahead for this two-step process and gathering required documents before starting helps the process move smoothly.
Document Requirements and What to Bring
Preparing the correct documents before your enrollment appointment is one of the most important parts of the TSA PreCheck process. You will need to bring original copies of specific documents to verify your identity, citizenship or permanent residency, and Social Security number.

For identity verification, bring one of the following government-issued photo IDs: a valid U.S. passport, a valid state-issued driver's license, a valid state-issued identification card, a valid military ID, or a Native American tribal ID document. If your ID is expired, it may still be used for identification purposes, though the TSA prefers current IDs when possible.
To prove U.S. citizenship, you must bring one of these documents: a U.S. birth certificate (certified copy with an official seal), a U.S. passport, a passport card, a naturalization certificate, a Certificate of Citizenship, or a military discharge form (DD-214). For lawful permanent residents, bring your Permanent Resident Card (green card) or a passport from your country of origin paired with documentation of your U.S. permanent resident status.
You must also provide proof of your Social Security number. Acceptable documents include your original Social Security card, a tax return from the previous year, a W-2 form, or a 1099 form. If you do not have a Social Security number, discuss alternative verification methods with the enrollment center when scheduling your appointment.
Additionally, bring your original documents from your online registration. If you uploaded images of documents, bring the original physical copies. The enrollment officer will verify that the originals match what you submitted online. Bring your current address verification if you have recently moved. This can be a utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement dated within the past 60 days.
The TSA PreCheck website maintains a detailed checklist of acceptable documents. Before your appointment, review the specific list on the TSA's official website to ensure you bring everything needed. Missing documents can result in your appointment being rescheduled, which delays your enrollment timeline.
Practical takeaway: Gather all required documents before your appointment and verify them against the TSA's official checklist. This preparation prevents rescheduling and keeps your enrollment on track.
Costs, Fees, and Payment Options
The standard cost for TSA PreCheck enrollment is $85 for a five-year membership period. Some enrollment centers charge $78 depending on their location and management structure
